So you want to Start Mountain Biking

It's a common misconception that getting into mountain biking is expensive. Well, it can be, but not THAT expensive. You don't really need a P50K or P100K top-of-the-line mountain bike to enjoy riding. Of course, a P1,500, P3,000 or even an P8,000 bike from a sports shop in your local mall is not gonna cut it. If you're going to take the sport seriously, you'll need a bike with quality parts that are built to last, at least for a couple of years before you'll want to upgrade. Prepare to spend around P15K on your bike and P3K on your gear and you're good to go.

There are a few things you have to decide before deciding on what bike to build or buy.

  • The type of riding you are interested in doing:
    1. Road/Subdivision Biking
    2. Real Off-Road Biking
    3. Off-Road Downhill Biking
    4. Combination of 2 and 3
  • Your budget.
  • These are the things your Local bike shop guy will ask you as you enter the door. He will also help you determine which parts you have to spend on and which ones you can scrimp on.

Here's a list with approximate costs to build your budget bike:

    1. Bike :

    Bike Sub-Total : from P14,850

    2. Gear :

Gear Sub-Total : from 2,925.00 (helmet and water bottle)

    Total : from 17,775

Below is a List of Bike Shops that I patronize and have found to be reliable:

    Quezon City

Ortigas / San Juan / Mandaluyong

    Cartimar / Pasay

With this information in hand I hope I was able to encourage you take that plunge and start building you first Bike. If there are any questions that you want to ask please don't hesitate to e-mail me. I hope to see you on the trails soon.
